HI
Supplementary question.
I thought a 308 and 7.62 were the same.
So why are the two rounds listed separately?

simply because the first one is the commercial name and the second one is
the NATO name of the same cartridge.
If you like better, they are the "American" and the "european" designation
of the same cartridge.
the same is for the 6,5x52R or 25-35 win and for the 5,6x52R and 22 Savahe

Fundamentally the same except that 7.62 brass is made to a different spec
and you can expect it to be thicker leading to the need for a lighter load.
I have to drop more than a whole grain of pwder in my 308 with HPI 7.62
brass if I'm to avoid pressure problems.

Just be sure you're talking about the ->right "7.62" ammo, namely 7.62x51.

There's also 7.62x54r and 7.62x39 (and probably others) commonly
available.

Spotted that.
Had the calibers explained to me but went way over my head.
Most of it seems easy then you get wierd designations and some the same.
Asked once is it possible to put the wrong round in a gun with bad
consequences. One guy said no another said yes.
So if anone know a good reference that explains the different calibers let
me know.

A good place to start would be the Web site of any big commercial ammo
maker. You'll find dimensions and ballistic characteristics of all of
them somewhere.

another good site to look at is the wikipedia rifle ammo listing - it is
quite good at explaining where the thickness of the brass, change of
shoulder etc. can make pressure a problem (or not) with cartridges that are
the same 'size' but different name - see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rifle_cartridges
